Using an infrared thermometer, we were able to demonstrate that with the Lutron shades closed, at 3 p.m. on a July afternoon on south-facing windows, the temperature was almost 10 degrees cooler than when we had them open. Although any properly installed honeycomb shade would provide identical insulation, smart ones take care of the process of opening and closing without your having to worry about it.
During our long-term testing, the shades lost their connection to the remote and app multiple times, requiring us to go through the pairing process far more times than we cared for. At one point we had to completely reset the hub and app before we could get it up and running again. Thankfully, we could still reach the on-device button, otherwise we would have lost a lot of sleep.
The blinds we tested are powered by four D-cell batteries (very small shades may use AA batteries), and there is no rechargeable option, but you can also order models that can be plugged in or hardwired. Installing the Lutron blinds was slightly trickier than it was for our budget pick, MySmartBlinds, since it required drilling. But it was straightforward, and the included instructions were clear. The process was very similar to that of the Lutron smart shades, as was the ordering process, which can be done entirely online.
